Experiencing Astronomy

This page gives a list of internship opportunities available to ALL graduate students.  This allows them to gain experience in astronomy and get a "feel" for astronomy research.   This also helps the students to make a decision in choosing astronomy as their career.

1.  RAD@home:  It is a citizen-science research collaboratory that is built on the Facebook group by the Principal Investigator of this group is Dr. Ananda Hota.  This is a human resource network aimed to educate any BSc/BE student interested in astronomy and carry with them publishable level research.   This is a convenient idea because you can learn and do research sitting at home.

2. Internships:

  • Summer internship at Indian Institute of Astronomy:  This is offered every year in May and June.  Final year B.Sc/B.Tech/M.Sc/M.Tech students are eligible.
  • Vacation student's program at Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA):  This is offered in May and June.  Deadline is often in February every year.  Final year B.Sc/B.Tech/M.Sc/M.Tech students are eligible.
  • Introductory summer school in Astronomy and Astrophysics:  This offered every even-numbered years in IUCAA during the summer.  B.Tech/M.Sc final year students are eligible to apply.
  • Summer internship program at Physical Research Laboratory:  This is an eight-week program offered in summer for pre-final year M.Sc students.  Students should have taken physics and mathematics in their undergraduate.  Engineering students are not eligible.
  • Research internship awards at IIT Bombay:  Second year MSc or Final and Pre-final year B.Tech are qualified to apply.
  • Visiting Student's Research Program at the National Center for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-TIFR):  They organize summer research program from May to July every year.  Deadline for the application is in February.  Final and Pre-final year MSc/BE/B.Tech students are eligible to apply.

A special note for internships at IUCAA or at NCRA is that, even if you do not get selected to these internship programs, if you are residing in Pune or if you are willing to find your own accommodation, you can still attend the lectures.  All you have to do is send an email to the concerned person and just let them know.  I believe that this is true with most of the other institutes.  When in doubt, send an email to them and request them to allow you to attend the classes.
